His key early projects were a series of innovative houses, many employing unusual structural solutions such as the use of furniture as load-bearing structure, but he came to international prominence with his “paper tube” projects, in which cardboard tubes are used as the structural system. Ban has also been recognised for his work in creating emergency relief shelters. Recent and current projects include housing in the United States and Sri Lanka, and the new Centre Pompidou-Metz in France, due for completion next year. After working with Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Italy and Japan, he returned to Wellington to establish Architecture Workshop in 1991. Since then he has produced a series of projects acclaimed both locally and internationally - Architecture Workshop’s Peregrine Winery (2005) received an NZIA Supreme Award and the AR’s ar+d Emerging Architecture award in the UK. ERNST ZÖLLNER / NEW ZEALAND TRANSPORT AGENCYWednesday 30th September, 6:00pmEngineering Lecture Theatre 1.439, 20 Symonds Street, The University of Auckland Ernst Zöllner is an urban planner and economist with urban design sensitivities. Before joining the NZTA, Ernst was Director of Planning and Urban Design at Wellington City Council, lectured in public policy, infrastructure planning and urban economics at the University of Auckland, and worked for as a consultant and adviser to local and central governments in New Zealand and South Africa, based in Wellington, Auckland, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. RICHARD NAISH / RTA STUDIOWednesday 7th October, 6:00pmEngineering Lecture Theatre 1.439, 20 Symonds Street, The University of Auckland RTA Studio have a growing reputation for innovative commercial and educational architecture. Richard Naish and Tim Melville formed RTA Studio in 1999, and have produced award-winning buildings remarkable for their bold form-making and their innovative use of materials. Their Ironbank project, now approaching completion in Auckland, has been nominated for a prize in this year’s World Architecture Festival. SIR MILES WARREN / WARREN & MAHONEYWednesday 14th October, 6:00pmEngineering Lecture Theatre 1.439, 20 Symonds Street, The University of Auckland Sir Miles Warren is one of the greats of New Zealand architecture, producing some of our nation’s defining buildings. He established Warren & Mahoney with Maurice Mahoney in 1958, the firm growing to become one the country’s largest and most successful practices. In 1995 he was made a member of the Order of New Zealand, the nation’s highest honor, and in 2000 was awarded the NZIA Gold Medal for lifetime achievement.
